GLOBAL leaders-from business, charities and the cultural, educational, media, political and financial sectors, talked about how men and women could become true partners. They also discussed ways of promoting individual growth and social progress. Hundreds of China’s elite women attended the forum. Meng Xiaosi, vice-president and member of the Secretariat of the All-China-Women’s Federation (ACWF) delivered the keynote speech, the theme of which was “gender equality in China” Said Meng “China has been a powerhouse that has promoted global women’s development. Over the past century, Chinese women have made three historic steps forward, walking out of their domestic lives, entering the world beyond their homes and going global in a firm and steady manner. However , she added, Chinese women still face many problems and challengers. China, though has pledged to fulfil its responsibilities in advancing gender equality, Meng said. Chinese President Xi Jinping in September 2015 hosted the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment at the UN headquarters. In his speech he made four proposals aimed at promoting women’s comprehensive development, and his speech was widely commended by the international community. The ACWF is an organization devoted to serving all Chinese women, and the federation’s further development requires every woman’s attention and support. Women’s dreams are about progress, equality, harmony and love, and involve their devotion to their country, careers and families. The event has impressed people with its name, Her Village, which means that women enjoy endless possibilities of self-realization in this big world, and which reveals the prospects of women as they create a greater world. The ACWF is a mass organization that unites women, of all ethnic groups, as they strive for further liberation and development. ACWF works to protect women’s rights and interests, and promote gender equality. More specifically ACWF has been facilitating women’s economic development, by supporting implementation of the policy of offering small secured loans to women. By the end combined 300 billion yuan (US $ 46.2 billion) in small loans had been issued to 5,56 million women. Those loans helped the women find employment and/or start that own businesses. To better protect women’s rights and interests, ACWF’s officials made proposals regarding gender equality during amendments to nearly 300 laws of regulations over the past five years. The federation has also helped protect women’s land-use rights by ensuring that women’s names are written in land-use registration certificates. The ACWF pays attention to building harmonious and happy families. The federation has implemented various projects, such as the family culture festival. In additional, the federation has spoken on behalf of women each year during the annual sessions of China’s top legislative and advisory bodies. Female representatives from women’s federations, at various levels, have made proposals such as eliminating employment discrimination, combating domestic violence, introducing follow-up policies for the two-child family policy and helping women balance family and career, during the sessions. The ACWF has long promoted exchanges and cooperation with women in other countries. The federation has build ties with 700 women and children’s organizations or institutions in more than 170 countries or regions. The federation will host the G20 (Group of Twenty Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors) Women’s Conference in Xi’an, capital of northwest China’s Shanxi Province Chinese Women’s Research Society to carry out research and advocate on major gender issues. During the past 20 years, more than 100 universities have instituted courses on gender equality and women’s studies, enhanced the gender equality perspective of the younger generations, and are training specialized talent in the field of women/gender studies.
