Share Tweet Share Share BEIJING CONFUCIAN TEMPLE (1302-1306) The name of Confucian Temple and Imperial Academy Museum is from the two ancient architectural complexes in Beijing Confucian Temple & Imperial Academy located in the north of Chengzong Tamerlane Dade 6th year (AD 1302), the construction of a temple on this site was started and in Yuan Dade 10th year (AD 1306)the temple was completed, with the Imperial Academy on its west, the construction of which was founded in 1287 and completed in 1308. They are in compliance with the layout principle of “temple on left and academy on right” Beijing Confucian Temple is an important site for worshiping Confucius and playing ritual music by imperial household of Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasty. Beijing Imperial Academy is not only the supreme institution of higher learning in Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasty, having the function of governing education affairs across the country, but also an important site for emperor giving lectures and imperial scholars attending the flower-wearing ceremony. In 1961, Imperial Academy was granted the title of 1st batch national key cultural relic protection entity. The Two ancient architectural complexes embody the essence of Chinese traditional cultivation ( Confucian culture and thought of studies on Confucian classics) in past 5000 years, and integrate the education patterns (imperial college education and imperial examination system) that is ancient in China even in the whole world. It is ancient but not conservative, worldly but not pedantic, centuried but youthful. In 1989, under the leadership and demonstration of Li Chaoying, the director of Confucian Temple management institution, the careful guidance of Ai Chunhua and Jiang Fan, two experts and assistance of Ms. Kong Demao the 77th generation granddaughter of Confucius, the Confucius-workshiping ceremony in Beijing Confucius Temple was revived. In 2005 as Capital Museum, Capital Library and Beijing Youngsters & Children Library were moved out, Confucius Temple and Imperial Academy were combined and then the management center for Confucius Temple and Imperial Academy was established, with Ma Fazhu took the office of director. In 2005, according to the approval by the CPC Beijing Committee and Beijing Municipal government, the overhaul upon Confucius Temple and Imperial Academy for resuming their former layouts and structures at the cost of over RMB 100 million Yuan was started and the construction project was completed at the end of 2007. Therefore, Confucian Temple and Imperial Academy has a brand new appearance. Beijing Imperial Academy – Biyong Hall (1287-1308) In June 2008,the management center for Confucian Temple and Imperial Academy was renamed as Confucian Temple and Imperial Academy Museum, which had been open for visitors during the Olympic Games. The first curator, Mr. Wu Zhiyou along with other leaders and all of their colleagues aroused their all efforts to make the museum prosperous. In 2009 in accordance with the comprehensive assessment by experts convened by State Administration of Cultural Heritage, Imperial Academy street (Chengxian street) had ranked 1st on the “list of top 10 famous street in terms of history & culture in China”. On September 28, 2010, the teachers and students from Taiwan and Mailand jointly worshiped Confucius in the Confucian Temple. Many famous scholars & experts attended the ceremony, which was the first official Confucius-worshiping co-organized since the founding of new China. Since then, the ceremony of worshiping Confucius in Beijing Confucius Temple has become a grand ceremony in each September in Beijing. In early 2011 a copper bell was built inside of the Dacheng gate and outside of Chongsheng Hall gate, with the inscription on bell recording the historical facts and eulogizing the achievement. In June 2011, the protection shack of Imperial-Scholar-List tablets and the Thirteen Classics stone tablets were renewed. The locations of three tablets in the exhibition area of Imperial-Scholar-List tablets was properly adjusted. The tablet of Da Xue was moved, the Thirteen Classics Tablet 239 and Imperial- Scholar-List Tablet 198 was strengthened. Protection project cost over 4 months. In July 2012 the project of renewing the east and west wing-rooms of Jin Yi Pavilion in the Imperial Academy was completed. Since the establishment of Confucian Temple and Imperial Academy Museum, It’s aimed at developing and expanding the studies of Chinese ancient civilization, building “human Beijing” international city and cultural country, focusing on spreading the spirit of study of Chinese ancient civilization, erudition, self-cultivation and grace and high-efficiency, elaboration, safety and harmony, adhering to the work thought of attaching equal importance to protection and use, developing and integrating resources, promoting traditional culture, highlighting innovative activities, creating traditional brand of studies of Chinese ancient civilization, creating dual-efficiency, ensuring the safety of cultural relics, building human Beijing and cultural powerful nation, scientifically protects the museum, properly make use of the museum and successfully bring the museum to later generation, making the museum see a comprehensive, coordinative and sustainable development. This museum has successively created studies of Chinese ancient civilization, brands such as China tradition festival cultural activity, studies of Chinese ancient civilization auditorium activity. Dacheng ritual music exhibition and performance activity, studies of Chinese ancient civilization festival in Beijing Confucian Temple and Imperial Academy (has been successively held 3 times) and the teaching activity in “ Chengxian Pavilion for Studies of Chinese Ancient Civilization” ect.. which further improve the popularity and influence of this museum in the cultural field. Besides in accordance with the requirement of building “Beijing Incorrupt Government Education Base”, this museum spread the essence of study of Chinese ancient civilization. The curator Wu Zhiyon and the secretary Xu Ming personally give lectures for officials at section and bureau level from Beijing even across the country, which obtain favourable reception. The Outline of Confucius Temple and Imperial Academy Museum is co-authored by Han Ying, an associate research fellow and Zhang Bingqian and Dong Yanmei, two fellows in this museum.
