While addressing the valedictory function, during the animators and volunteers training on peace education and peace building programme at Peace Channel Hall Dimapur, the Principal of the New Master of Social Work (MSW) College, Fr. C.P. Anto, informed the youth that the Diocese of Kohima, Nagaland is initiating first MSW college, affiliated to Nagaland University under the name North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR) has started taking admission for the academic year 2014. Any graduate who have completed graduation in any stream with aggregate marks of 45% for SC/ST and 50% for General to apply for the course. The prospectus and the other details can be obtained from the office. He also stated that it is the first college to start MSW in Peace and Conflict Transformation Studies and Second College to give degree in Youth Development in India.
It has been a long cherished dream of the Catholic Church in Nagaland to start the professional and masters degree courses in the state to cater to the need of the youth in the region. More recently, the church has been making concerted efforts to amply complement the higher education initiatives of the Government through opening colleges of excellence in science, arts and commerce streams. It has been a long felt need to promote professional education scenario in the state as the number of educated unemployed youth is burgeoning in our state. With job opportunities in government and private service sector, with general educational background at saturation point, many are left to venture outside the state and the North East for further education and employment. This scenario adds to the deprivation of the poor as they cannot afford to opt for studies outside the state due to financial constraints. It is in this background that the Diocese of Kohima proposes to open an MSW College in the heart of the commercial capital of the state, Dimapur which was appreciated and approved by the Nagaland University. He also thanked the government of Nagaland, Department of Higher Education and the University officials of the state for considering the urgent need to open the professional courses to help the youth in the state and the region. In order to give cultural and social relevance to the course we have inducted in the syllabus many issues and concerns of our People in the region.
NEISSR seeks to mould young minds to contribute to building a new social order based on human dignity and social justice, work with a preferential option for the vulnerable and exploited, both locally and globally and build a cadre of young, competent professionals having a global perspective and a strong value base of compassion, personal integrity, moderation, tolerance and self-respect. It will offer specializations in Peace and Conflict Transformation Studies, Community Development and Youth Development. The Specialization in Peace and Conflict Transformation Studies deals with one of the most pressing issues of the contemporary world. Challenges that confront actors in conflict and post conflict societies reflect on the complexity of peace and peace building, combining theoretical and in-depth practical approaches. Prepares community members and students to relate interdisciplinary approaches to prevent conflict in the communities and organizations and help them to resolve community, organizational or family issues. The Youth Development specialization is concerned with the field of youth and youth activities. youth development workers can work under both formal and non formal settings. They are trained to be the catalysts of change that could develop youth talent and leadership and the Community Development Specialization focuses its attention on urban and rural communities and their development.

I grew up in Chile, got my medical degree there, began an academic career in 1970, and left for the USA due to the military coup in early 1974. My first job in the USA was working as a public nutrition professor in the international programme of Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee.
I started to travel to Africa in 1975, and worked a year in Cameroun in 1980 helping to prepare their five-year nutrition plan. I then moved to New Orleans, to Tulane University’s School of Public Health, and taught in the department of nutrition for ten years, before moving to Nairobi where I was an advisor in the Ministry of Health. Seven years there got me into extensive consulting in Africa, often on nutritional issues. In 1995 moved to Vietnam where I worked for two and a half years in the Ministry of Health as a senior primary health care advisor.
Many years of touching the reality on the ground, in Latin America, then the USA, then Africa and Asia, has made me understand that the real challenge is in the social and political determinants of malnutrition. I have devoted my writings and teaching to that. Over the years, I have found an important shift in my colleagues’ attitude and understanding towards acknowledging the basic causes of malnutrition. But yet I see little happening as a result. I submit that it is our guild’s lack of experience in the political arena that explains this dichotomy. I devote much of my energy to bridge this gap, and am a fervent advocate of empowering claim holders to demand needed changes from duty bearers. Nutrition is a perfect port of entry for that. Equity, social justice and people’s empowerment in a human rights sense is what really will make a difference.
There is no alternative but to deal with nutrition problems as indivisibly linked to social, political and environmental problems. We need to address them as such. The question is: are we all prepared to do that? The answer, in my view, decides whether we are part of the solution or part of the problem. Travelling and living in different parts of the world has reinforced my conviction that we need to get down from our academic ivory towers, and need to change the curricula of our young and upcoming colleagues, to give them the tools to act in such a context. To me, public health nutrition cannot be anything but that.
