Thanks to Professor Avery for his strong appeal. For my old peace organization, the appeal about the insanity and illegality of the use or threat of use or even the possession of nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction has been paramount – since 1947.

The peace and human rights, faith and humanitarian movements have long have distanced themselves from the “how” of outlawing and enforcing the illegality of weapons of mass destruction – so the current developments are hopeful with ICAN and the new treaty.

My peace organization has been a strong supporter of the Rome Statute and the International Criminal Court, a still-new independent (not Security Council controlled) world court that makes the use of weapons of mass destruction a crime applicable to the individuals who would order their use – presidents, prime ministers, ministers, generals, etc. Nearly 2/3 of the world’s governments have ratified this treaty.

Having the “world community” enforce the laws prohibiting the use of these weapons – which would include logically the possession and production of the weapons – remains the dilemma of ultimate concern. The aforesaid peace and faith and human rights and humanitarian groups have not agreed on the “how” beyond their goal of changing the “hearts and minds” of the perpetrators – which is as unrealistic as is the insanity of the current policy of “mutual assured destruction.” The human rights groups have moved more legally on this issue.

To enforce global laws on the most powerful nations and individuals and corporations- and not only the North Koreans – this remains the challenge of the global politics of survival and human rights – and parenthetically of global warming, private sector regulations, etc.

So, in this bubble of human celebration of spiritual connectedness in late December of 2017, in also this period of Trumpism, exitism, extreme nationalism rising, anti-immigration, anti-refugeeism, building walls, irrational economic nationalism- let us again struggle with the “how” of enforcing global norms on not only the least, but the most powerful.

The argument against nuclear weapons, eloquently put forward by Prof. John Scales Avery, is quite right.

However, it misses a vital point. If one or some – but not all – countries destroy their nuclear weapons, they leave themselves at the mercy of the remaining countries that still have nuclear weapons.

So the key question is: how can we get all nuclear-armed countries to get rid of their nuclear weapons at the same moment?

Without such a commitment no nuclear country will destroy their nuclear weapons, as they will always want to be in a position to defend themselves from nuclear attack…. or, at least from the threat of nuclear attack.

If Prof. Avery, or anyone else, could come up with a foolproof solution o this question, that – and only that – would solve the question.

Nuclear weapons and devices capable of causing destruction of huge proportion
by each such device. If we are worried of radiation than we should think of small
devices also. Large number of small devices radiating day and night. The impact
is not immediately visible but it impacts on living bodies.

Next intellectuals should promote what should be the duty, responsibility and right of every individual born in this globe. One can change his living space be it a village, city or country. One can change the faith he/she believes. But till date it is sure one cannot change the planet he/she lives. So we all must follow one discipline not to harm other .

While to get every country to disarm from their nuclear weapons at the same time, it perhaps is not a practical aim and for sure it would delay such a process,
but if one would start to set the exanple, and a conference held to encourage another to follow it would help, and might turn the emotional tide from aggression towards a more peaceful solution.
Some few women tied themselves to railings to get womens suffrage. All movements start small and grow.
But while many countries are nuclear arming it encourages others and the thought of WAR is uppermost in the mind set of all.
We require a PEACEFUL mindset, which is more likely to come about with disarming.
    Disarm to save the WORLD
