”under the onslaught of the placeless, transnational capital McDonald’s exemplifies, democracy as a living system withers and dies”? Can we afford these sweeping generalisations that convenientily put all the balme on those convenient ”bad guys” of transnational capital and globalisation? In countries like India, have we even transitioned from eloctoral democracy (the ritual of ”free and fair” elections) to having sensible political manifestoes, outside of the parochial/feudal/ vested-class/caste interest of mainstream party politics, and a democratic system that is routinely subverted by the bureacratic elite? It is too convenient to ignore the transformative potential of individual and collective action, and narratives like this are this only make it convenient to place the blame elsewhere. As for ”the global backlash against mainstream politicians is, at heart, an attempt to reassert national sovereignty against the forces of undemocratic globalisation”, what counts as ”global”? – I don’t see any backlash in most countries (count) in the world. And is ”national sovereignty” really the answer to ”undemocratic globalisation”? Too much nationalism undermines democracy both locally and internationally. What we perhaps need more clarity on is the appropriate scale at which democracy can work, and the parameters by which we can judge it to be working, rather that treating it like this holy cow that can work magic.

Brilliant!! Sadly, so true. But very few people care or get anywhere near to understanding what’s occurring. In fact, they don’t want to. They actually like McDonalds. I loathe everything about them, including the food. I’ve never had a ‘Big Mac’. I’ve never been to a ‘Bunnings’ store and have no intention of ever doing so. The whole conception of ‘chains’ sickens me.

It is a very good article. If you take U. S as a model of democracy, one is amazed to see the extreme gap between the richest and the poorest. And how seamlessly
people move between politics, business/Corporates and finance. MNCs like Mac are just example to show how they work and try to limit personal choices through various persuasive methods. But the hidden motive is profit . India is still struggling to stand on its feet as a democracy and the MNCs interest is only in the middle income group which has become sustantial as a market as it happened in case of China in the seventies.
